This new resource presents a comprehensive view of radio-frequency (RF) positioning. The book is organized to allow readers to progress at a fast pace, from the fundamentals of RF positioning, to the use of advanced tools such as artificial intelligence algorithms and application development environments. The first part of the book covers the fundamentals of RF localization. The second part addresses the application of those fundamentals in several types of wireless networks and technologies as Cellular Networks, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Sensor Networks, Ultra Wide Band, and Global Navigation Satellite Systems. The third part brings several tools to allow rapid development of positioning applications for mobile devices, as well as to support implementation, usage, deployment, and research of localization algorithms. This book presents numerous MATLAB examples, accompanied by the corresponding MATLAB code, made available at the book website. The MATLAB code to most figures is also provided, as well as databases of measurements collected during experiments conducted both in cellular and Wi-Fi networks. The book also is accompanied by Android source codes of the example apps developed in Chapter 10.

  • Rafael Saraiva Campos Rafael Saraiva Campos obtained his B.Sc. in Telecommunications Engineering in 2000, his M.Sc. in Electronic Engineering (Artificial Intelligence Systems) in 2008 and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering (Signal Processing). Since 2014, he teaches Calculus and Linear Algebra at the undergraduate Computer Engineering course at CEFET/RJ. He worked during eight years as an RF planning engineer in a multi-national cellular telephony operator, helping to operate and maintain one of the first LBS systems in Brazil, back in 2003. He holds a patent on RF fingerprinting emergency call localization in 2G cellular networks and has published several papers on RF positioning and Artificial Intelligence at IEEE Conference Proceedings and journals.
  • Lisandro Lovisolo Lisandro Lovisolo is an associate professor in the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering (DETEL) at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). At UERJ since 2003, he has been lecturing both at undergraduate and graduate levels. There he founded PROSAICO (Signal Processing, Intelligent Applications and Communications Laboratory) in 2007. He earned his D. Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 2006. He was born in Neuquen, Argentina, in 1974. However, he enjoys thinking himself as Brazilian and born in Rio de Janeiro.

This book presents the rst comprehensive treatment of RF positioning for a wide range of possible practical environments. The book covers from the basic tools for localization to the currently employed methods in deployed systems. The writing style is direct to the point without sacrificing clarity, while achieving a superb job of covering the key tools for the positioning of devices employing radio frequency. It starts by explaining the basic geometrical approaches for positioning and the main approaches to location estimation, following by describing the typical a priori knowledge of some parameters available in the network infrastructure. With the basics covered, the books proceeds by presenting in an unprecedented manner the positioning strategies in types of networks such as: 3GPP cellular, local area networks, satellite systems, and bluetooth and UWB networks.

The authors then present very nice overview of articial intelligence tools describing their usefulness to RF positioning. The last part of the book discusses the development of an application software for Android devices. This book will be extremely useful to any professional dealing or interested in positioning in general. Its MATLAB tools available to the reader allow a quick access to implementation of the learned tools, facilitating the probing by practitioners in the field.

The authors succeeded in producing a unique, very readable and inspiring book about RF positioning.

It is an excellent book that provides direct and precise language that engineers need to know about location. The authors start with a historical overview which I found to be very important, as it indicates the evolution of the technology. The book covers basic techniques like TOA and AOA and its applications in fingerprinting, cellular, WLAN, GNSS and Bluetooth. It is the most comprehensive work I seen about the subject. It also gives the future evolution of location and presents tools that can be used by professionals. This is a must read.

Anyone working in positioning systems and their multiple applications will find this book as an invaluable reference in the topic with a complete compendium of techniques and methods used in the different RF positioning approaches, as well as the fundamentals in which they are based.

Geographical positioning has attracted considerable interest during the last decades. The ubiquity of the Global Positioning System (GPS) through the mobile devices has eased the spreading of this concept. However, the exciting field of RF positioning has shown to be much wider than a set of techniques related to the GPS. This is the motto of the book RF Positioning: Fundamental, Applications and Tools, by Rafael S. Campos and Lisandro Lovisolo.

This superb work has been conceived along almost a decade of research activities, in which the authors dealt with different aspects of the theme, like algorithms, protocols and services. Such experience allows Drs. Campos and Lovisolo to provide an up to date, complete and original manuscript. For a long time RF positioning deserved a text worthy of its importance, the present book definitively fills this gap.
