  • Habib F. Rashvand

    is currently a Professor and Director of Advanced Communication Systems at the University of Warwick, which focuses on involving global academics and innovative industries to build a sustainable global village. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Kent in 1980. Dr. Rashvand has over 100 publication records, including books, research papers and book chapters.

  • Ali Abedi

    is currently a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Cooperating Professor of Computing and Engineering, and Assistant Vice President for Research at the University of Maine, Orono. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Waterloo in 2004. Dr. Abedi is a senior member of IEEE, the co-founder of two start-up companies and co-inventor of Wireless Sensors for Brain Injury Detection.

Rashvand and Abedi have provided straightforward solutions, design, and practical instruction on how wireless sensors systems work and how they can be applied in many new applications. In this unique and first of the kind volume of using smart sensors in form of wireless sensor network (WSN) they take some of the mystery out of RF that some system engineers use as an excuse to not consider wireless alternatives. It is refreshing to read their thorough treatment of active, passive and hybrid wireless schemes, many of whom we have heard from in our Passive Wireless Sensor Technology Workshops and Wireless for Space and Extreme Environment Conferences. We needed this comprehensive tutorial on the various aspects of wireless sensing in extreme environments to bring better educated engineers and managers into aerospace and other industries. My assessment from over 35 years working for NASA and 20 years in the Air Force is that this book is fundamental for what I have called “Fly-by-Wireless” - a paradigm shift from assuming wires, connectors and penetrations in aerospace architectures to seriously considering wireless alternatives to replace the standard approaches where appropriate.

 

This reference will be very helpful in enabling wireless connectivity on commercial aircraft soon, as there is now an approved RF band to use world-wide for safety critical functions. The book forms the basis for future incorporation of new advances in technologies like 3D printing and advanced manufacturing with new materials, multifunctional flexible and rigid structures, advanced high-speed design and simulation tools, LED and XRay communication, merging of new imaging and wireless data communications and sensors, new multifunction sensors - all leading new wireless applications that improve autonomy, efficiency, safety and reliability.
