IEC 61850 is an international standard that defines communications protocols for intelligent devices and substation communication and automation. This book introduces the different parts of the standard and their evolution from a substation-centered approach towards its expansion, targeting the coverage of different domains of the smart grid and approaching the subject of digitization of the grid from a practical point of view. The IEC 61850 standard utilizes named data objects and attributes that support the interoperability between multifunctional devices from different manufacturers integrated in protection automation and control systems. Utility specialists will benefit from this book, as it highlights the contribution of the standard in introducing high speed peer -to-peer communications that support different substation and wide area protection and automation related applications. This book helps readers better understand the modeling concepts of complex devices and systems, introduces efficient methods for the engineering and testing of protection and control systems, and helps define a standardization process and migration strategy. With in-depth coverage of applications related to protection, control, automation, and integration of renewables, this book will be an invaluable tool to utility industry engineers. This is also an excellent resource for researchers developing protection, automation and control devices in systems based on the standard, and consultants helping with the implementation of the standard in different projects.
