This cutting-edge resource examines the four core technologies behind today's broadband networks. You get in-depth coverage of TCP/IP, ATM, SDH/SONET and WDM Networking technologies, which are being utilized to meet the demands of today's diverse service features. The book presents a framework of networking principles that forms a basis of the comparison of these technologies with respect to their relative strengths, weakness and fields of use. Moreover, you learn how the technologies differ, what they have in common, and how they interact. Explanations of these technologies are provided within the concepts of architecture and layering models, multiplexing and switching methods, routing algorithms and protocols, traffic management methods, and QOS support. You also get one of the first overviews of the IP over WDM field. Supported with over 200 illustrations and 40 equations.
